My GAME Plan

This week, I feel as though I have not gotten much accomplished in my GAME plan. I have been sick with a bad cold, and working on grades because they are due this week. Sadly to say, my planning had to take a back burner.

I wanted to incorporate technology in each unit, and to teach my students a new technology in each lesson. I am finding it difficult to implement at this time. I think that I can do a better job if I plan for next semester. I can begin the semester with specific goals in mind and can begin on the first day of class. As I develop my lessons for the Algebra 2 classes that I have next semester, I will be incorporating lessons on technology.

  1. It seems we are forever busy as teachers. I suppose that is one of the nice things that make a day go so fast. Realistically I think incorporating technology is a baby steps thing.

I have not used it in years (only because I have not taught alg II in about 5 years), but there is a program called “green globs.” It was pretty cool. It put up quadratic (or linear) equations on the screen, and students have to write in the equation. It would show what equation you wrote in too if it was wrong.

I use to take 15 minutes here and there and have the students compete to se who could get the most correct in a set amount of time. They seemed to like it.

Here is the link for it: http://www.greenglobs.net/gg_pricing.html , it is not very expensive compared to everything else out there.

  2. Lisa,
I believe you have a fine plan. I am thinking the same thing. It seems too close to the holidays and end of the semester to try and implement technology into each unit. I believe that just interjecting small pieces at a time is enough to catch the attention of the students and encourage them to want more. I have been using small amounts of technology in appropriate places to help me become more comforatable and to highlight to the students what they could be capable of doing. I have used a voice thread for extra credit. Wednesday we used graphing calculators in my Algebra 2 classes and we have also used online graphing calculators. I use the Smartboard whenever possible and interactive game sites that allow my classes to review in a fun manner.
Keep up the good work. Maybe we can all take some time over the Christmas break to line up our Game plan and begin with one unit at a time.

  3. I don’t think people realize how hard it is for a teacher to be sick. We don’t just get to pick up the phone and call in sick. We have to make sub plans then correct, it takes way less time to just go in. When this happens at a critical time like grades being due, it is overwhelming.

As long as you are moving forward with technology, even with baby steps you are moving in the right direction.

If you feel you are not getting enough incorporated, you can put something out there as an extra credit and see what you get. It will give you a chance to see what students can do without assistance so when you can incorporate it into a lesson, you have a base.

    Hope you are feeling better!

  4. Hi Lisa -

I think you're probably doing a great job meeting your goals. We don't expect our students to fulfill goals immediately, and your sickness is like a speedbump in your progress. It might slow you down a bit, but chances are, when you feel better, you'll be right back at it! Even just thinking about adding the technology to your class is moving forward, and I think this is what our classes have all been about!

  5. Thanks Everyone for all the encouragement. Charles, that program sounds familiar. Thanks for the link, I will definately put it to use. I had to call in a sub for tomorrow. I am taking myself and son to the doctor. I am excited about next semester and having a really good plan for my Algebra 2 students. I am very hopeful to start out the semester with technology instruction. All of you are such a wonderful team to work with!
    Thanks,
    Lisa
